The missing Virginia boy who triggered an Amber Alert in Virginia over the weekend died from an accidental drowning, according to officials with the medical examiner's office.

According to the alert notice, Acevedo was abducted at 9 a.m. Friday and was last seen in the 200 block of Mica Avenue in Virginia Beach. That’s part of a large apartment complex in the Kempsville area of the city, west of Holland Road and south of Interstate 264.

Since the weekend, police have worked to find who may have sent the ransom messages. According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, investigators partnered with federal officials to trace the source to someone outside the U.S.; police said the messages were “a scam to obtain money from a family in distress.”
