Local, state and national authorities are warning smartphone users about a surge in unpaid toll text scams asking for money to avoid penalties and legal action.

If you’ve received a text message stating you owe money for an unpaid toll or EZ Pass charge? It’s more than likely to be a scam. Here is what you should be doing instead after more than 2,000 FBI complaints were filed this month.

In most instances, the scam text provides a link for making a payment, as well as claims that the supposedly owed amount will increase after a certain time period.
